Dr. Marla McMahon is a licensed psychologist who completed her doctorate in clinical psychology in 1996 at CSPP/Alliant University in San Diego, CA. She has worked extensively with adolescents, adults, and children in a variety of settings including both hospitals and clinics. During her internship at Children's Hospital of San Diego, she specialized in the treatment of trauma, the focus of her doctoral dissertation.
As a Clinical Psychologist, Dr. McMahon, works with her clients on gaining new perspectives, restoring balance, and increasing vitality in their lives. Dr. McMahon uses an integrative approach to psychotherapy incorporating mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and existential theories tailored for individual needs. After reviewing a person's unique factors of past and present concerns, she incorporates mind-body awareness to increase their sense of well-being, decrease stress, and improve their confidence to handle life's challenges.
Her practice includes: treating stress, depression, anxiety, trauma, and relationship problems. She also counsels those dealing with life transitions, trauma related conditions, fertility, pregnancy issues, adoption, and parenthood adjustment. Other interests that she has includes: natural approaches to depression and stress management, healthy living, as well as emotional and life coaching.
Dr. McMahon has been trained in Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) through the UCSD school of Medicine and through the training of Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD. She incorporates
meditation and mindful movement (such as yoga) into her practice for those who are interested and willing to engage in this approach.
